Radiating Arm Pain

When arm pain travels from your neck down through your shoulder and arm, it’s usually a sign that a nerve is involved. Here’s what causes radiating arm pain, how it differs from other arm pain, and how we approach treatment at Kyro Care.

What Is Radiating Arm Pain?

Radiating arm pain refers to pain that travels along the path of a nerve, typically starting in the neck and extending through the shoulder, arm, and sometimes into the hand. This pattern, called cervical radiculopathy, happens when a nerve root in the cervical spine becomes compressed or irritated.

Because the nerves that supply the arm originate in the neck, radiating arm pain often has little to do with the arm itself, which is why treatment typically focuses on the cervical spine.

Common Causes of Radiating Arm Pain

  • Herniated or bulging disc — the most common cause, when disc material presses on a nerve root in the neck.
  • Cervical spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck that puts pressure on nerve roots.
  • Bone spurs — extra bone growth, often related to arthritis, that narrows the space around a nerve root.
  • Poor posture — prolonged forward head posture can contribute to nerve irritation in the neck.
  • Degenerative disc disease — age-related wear on the cervical spine’s discs.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Pain starting in the neck or shoulder and radiating down the arm
  • A sharp, burning, or electric-shock sensation
  • Numbness or tingling in the arm, hand, or fingers
  • Weakness in the arm or hand
  • Symptoms typically on only one side of the body
  • Pain that worsens with certain neck positions or movements

When to See a Doctor

Most radiating arm pain improves with conservative care over several weeks. But some symptoms call for prompt evaluation.

Seek care promptly if:

  • Sudden, severe weakness in the arm or hand
  • Numbness or tingling that’s spreading or worsening
  • Pain following a significant injury
  • Symptoms accompanied by neck stiffness and fever
  • Symptoms that don’t improve after several weeks of conservative care

If any of these apply to you, call 386-400-3620 to schedule an evaluation rather than waiting it out.

How We Treat Radiating Arm Pain at Kyro Care

Every case starts with a physical exam to identify exactly which nerve root in the neck is involved. Once we understand the cause, treatment may include:

Chiropractic adjustment

Relieves pressure on the affected nerve root by restoring proper alignment and motion to the cervical spine.

Targeted stretches and exercises

Reduces tension on the nerve and strengthens the muscles that support the neck.

Soft-tissue therapy

Addresses muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders that can contribute to nerve irritation.

Posture correction

Reduces ongoing strain from forward head posture that can aggravate nerve symptoms.

We focus on conservative, non-surgical care first, and most patients see meaningful improvement within four to six weeks. call 386-400-3620 to schedule an evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my arm hurt when the problem is in my neck? +

The nerves that control sensation and movement in your arm originate in the cervical spine. When a nerve root there is compressed, you feel the pain, numbness, or weakness along the nerve’s path in the arm, even though the source is in the neck.

How is this different from carpal tunnel syndrome? +

Carpal tunnel involves compression at the wrist specifically, while radiating arm pain from the neck can cause similar hand symptoms but usually also involves neck pain or symptoms extending through the whole arm.

How long does radiating arm pain take to resolve? +

Most cases improve within four to six weeks with conservative care, though it depends on the underlying cause and how long symptoms have been present.

Will I need an MRI? +

Not always. Many cases can be diagnosed based on symptoms and a physical exam. Imaging is typically reserved for cases that don’t improve with conservative care or involve significant weakness.

Can poor posture really cause arm pain? +

Yes — prolonged forward head posture adds strain to the cervical spine and can contribute to nerve irritation that’s felt in the arm.

Do I need surgery for radiating arm pain? +

Most cases resolve with conservative, non-surgical care. Surgery is generally only considered for severe, progressively worsening symptoms that haven’t responded to other treatment.
