Headache

Not all headaches are the same — and many that seem unrelated to your spine actually originate in the neck. Here’s what commonly causes headaches, when they warrant medical attention, and how we approach treatment at Kyro Care.

What Is Headache?

A headache is pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. While most headaches are not serious, they can significantly affect daily life, especially when they become frequent or chronic.

One type in particular, called a cervicogenic headache, actually originates from the cervical spine (neck) rather than the head itself, and is often mistaken for a tension headache or migraine. Because chiropractic care addresses the neck directly, it’s often especially effective for this type.

Common Causes of Headache

  • Neck tension and misalignment — poor posture or muscle tightness in the neck is a leading cause of cervicogenic headaches.
  • Muscle tension — stress, poor posture, or eye strain can cause tension-type headaches, often described as a tight band around the head.
  • Migraine — a neurological condition causing intense, often one-sided headaches, sometimes with nausea or light sensitivity.
  • Dehydration or missed meals — simple lifestyle factors that are common, often overlooked headache triggers.
  • Poor posture (“tech neck”) — prolonged forward head posture strains the neck and can trigger referred head pain.
  • Jaw tension (TMJ) — clenching or jaw misalignment can radiate pain into the head and temples.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Pain that starts at the base of the skull or in the neck
  • A tight, band-like pressure around the head
  • Pain typically on one side, radiating from the neck to the forehead or behind the eye
  • Reduced neck range of motion accompanying the headache
  • Headaches triggered or worsened by certain neck positions
  • Muscle tenderness in the neck and shoulders

When to See a Doctor

Most headaches are manageable with conservative care. But certain symptoms call for prompt medical evaluation.

Seek care promptly if:

  • The worst headache of your life, or a sudden, severe onset
  • Headache following a head injury
  • Headache with fever, stiff neck, confusion, or vision changes
  • Headaches that are new after age 50
  • Headaches that steadily worsen over days or weeks

If any of these apply to you, seek medical evaluation promptly — these can be signs of a more serious condition.

How We Treat Headache at Kyro Care

Every case starts with a conversation about your headache pattern, triggers, and any related neck symptoms — this helps us determine whether your headaches are related to the cervical spine. Once we understand the underlying cause, treatment may include:

Chiropractic adjustment

Addresses misalignment in the cervical spine that can be a direct source of cervicogenic headaches.

Soft-tissue therapy

Releases tension in the neck and upper shoulder muscles that commonly contributes to headaches.

Posture correction

Reduces the ongoing strain from “tech neck” and other postural habits that trigger headaches.

Trigger identification

Helps you recognize and manage the specific factors that bring on your headaches.

We focus on identifying and addressing the root cause rather than just managing symptoms. Many patients with neck-related headaches notice real improvement within a few visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my headache is coming from my neck? +

Cervicogenic headaches typically start at the base of the skull, often on one side, and may worsen with certain neck movements or positions. A physical exam can help confirm whether your neck is contributing to your headaches.

Can chiropractic care help with migraines? +

While migraines have a different underlying mechanism than cervicogenic headaches, many migraine sufferers also have neck tension that contributes to their symptoms, and addressing it can provide some relief alongside other migraine management.

How often do I need treatment for headaches? +

It depends on the frequency and severity of your headaches. We’ll build a plan based on your specific pattern, and many patients notice fewer, less intense headaches within a few weeks.

Can poor posture really cause headaches? +

Yes — prolonged forward head posture, common with phone and computer use, adds significant strain to the neck and is one of the most common headache triggers we see.

Should I be worried about my headaches? +

Most headaches are not a sign of anything serious, but sudden, severe, or unusual headaches, especially with other symptoms like fever or vision changes, should be evaluated promptly.

Do you treat tension headaches too? +

Yes. Tension headaches often respond well to a combination of soft-tissue therapy, posture correction, and stress management strategies.
